This Is Why Lionel Messi Is the Greatest Footballer of All Time

It is a bold statement to make, but it is one that millions of football fans around the world will agree with: Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer of all time.

And the reason is not just the goals, the trophies, the technique, or the moments of genius. It is something deeper. The best footballers are the best problem solvers, and Messi has spent the last two decades solving problems that most players do not even see.

Argentina’s World Cup clash with Cape Verde was another reminder of that.

For long spells, Cape Verde frustrated Argentina with an extremely compact defensive setup. Their back line stayed connected to their holding midfielders, closing the spaces between the lines and denying Argentina the pockets where Messi usually comes alive. There was very little room to receive, turn, or combine centrally.

But Messi was watching. Studying. Waiting.

In the clip below, you can see him reading the pattern of the game and instructing teammates on the solution. Cape Verde were protecting central areas so aggressively that the solution was not another short pass into feet. The key was the space beyond them, a lofted pass from deep, delivered over the defensive line.

Messi identifies it, speaks with Lisandro “Licha” Martínez during the hydration break, and within minutes Argentina are celebrating a goal that looks spontaneous to everyone else, but was clearly planned by the player who saw the answer before anyone else.

That is pure football intelligence.

This is what separates Messi from every other great player. He does not just execute the game better than everyone else. He understands it earlier. He diagnoses the problem, finds the weakness, communicates the solution, and then has the technical brilliance to turn the idea into a goal.

That is why Lionel Messi is not only a genius with the ball. He is the definition of a footballing proble solver.

Earlier this week, we spoke on our social media about one of Messi’s most fascinating habits: his tendency to walk behind opposition back lines.

At first glance, it can look passive. But with Messi, very little is accidental.

By positioning himself on the blind side of defenders, he is constantly gathering information. He is identifying where the spaces are opening across the opposition back line, where he can drop in unnoticed, and, just as importantly, when his teammates have enough time and space to lift their heads and find him.

This goal was a perfect example of that trend.

Messi did not just arrive in the right place by chance. He had already read the structure, recognised the weakness, communicated the solution, and timed his movement to exploit the exact moment Argentina could play forward.

That is what makes him different.

For most players, movement is about getting free. For Messi, movement is about understanding the whole picture before anyone else does. He does not simply react to the game. He studies it, manipulates it, and then appears exactly where the solution is.

And that is why, even at this stage of his career, Lionel Messi continues to remind us why he belongs in the greatest of all time conversation.
